Why Do Bad Things Happen to Good People?

School ShootingSince the tragic mass shooting in Newtown, Connecticut at Sandy Hook Elementary School where 26 people including 20 innocent little children were brutally murdered by a cowardly dirt bag I have seen and heard many people respond in shock and awe.  People are asking why and they are wondering how something like this could happen and they are trying to make some kind sense of it all.

This horrific event reminds us that we have always thought that there might be some places that are safe in our world, whether it be a shopping mall, whether it be a movie theater, whether it be an elementary school classroom.  But even there we see that there really is no safe place from the evils of this world.

I think it is important to recognize that insane people are always going to do insane things no matter what, regardless of a good or bad cultural climate.

But what about a culture that says life is pretty cheap?  What about a culture that can kill a child in its mother’s womb for the sake of convenience?  What about a culture that glorifies violence and death in our movies, music, TV shows, video games, sports and literature?  What about a culture that says we are all an evolutionary product or a biological accident?  What about a culture that say there’s no Heaven, there’s no Hell, there’s no judgment and there’s no consequences for our actions? What about a culture that says there is no God?

This is the state of our current American culture… this is our culture today.

And It seems to me that we are seeing that our culture is having a significant and powerfully negative impact on people and it is shaping the world view of our children and teaching them that life is cheap.  As early as 30 – 40 years ago you never heard of mass shootings like Columbine High School, Virginia Tech, and now Sandy Hook Elementary School.

America: The Culture of Death

Because during the past 30 – 40 years America has devolved into a secular culture of death.

When the culture was different… people acted different.  This has nothing to do with guns.  There were plenty of guns back then, even more so than today.  When I was in high school during the mid to late 80’s many of us students had gun racks in our trucks filled with rifles and shotguns on school property every day.  Yet we never thought about using those guns to harm anyone.

So what has changed?

America has changed and we have become a secular culture of death.

  • We kill over 1 MILLION unborn babies in their mother’s womb every single year. This tell our children that they don’t matter
  • We glorify extreme acts of violence and murder in our movies, TV shows, music, sports and literature
  • We are exploiting innocent little children in movies often times making them the monsters and murderers of adults.  This is absolutely disgusting and reprehensible
  • We mock the traditional family in our culture and devalue the sanctity and dignity marriage
  • We devalue the dignity of humanity in our reality TV shows and exploit the weaknesses and feelings of our fellow human beings for the sake of entertainment
  • We allow our children to play video games where they are rewarded for getting the most kills and for racking up the highest body counts.  Through video games we are training our children and young adults to be little assassins and we are teaching them that life is not valuable and that there are no consequences for their actions
  • We have allowed God to be removed from our schools, universities and courthouses
  • We teach our children that there is no God and that we have evolved from pond scum and animals.  And yet we are surprised when people act like animals
  • We teach our children that there is no right or wrong and that there are no consequences for their actions because there is no moral compass by which to measure right and wrong
  • We glorify perversion and every kind of immorality and call it good or the “new normal”
  • We have elected a government that is the most anti-Christ administration in American history with leaders who place government authority over the authority of God.

America is Sin-Sick

When we divorce ourselves from the Christian principles and values that have governed humanity since the beginning of time then we are bound to suffer the consequences of our arrogance and rebellion against those principles and values.

America is sin-sick and no politician or amount of legislation is going to change that.  Only repentance and a return to God by the people of this nation is going to make a difference in our current culture of death.  We (including the church) have hardened our hearts against God who has blessed us beyond measure.  We have shaken our fists to heaven and told God that we don’t need You anymore… get out of our lives, get out of our schools, get out of our churches and get out of our culture!

We have rebelled against Him and have forgotten that it was He and He alone who gave us 200-plus years of freedom and prosperity, unprecedented in world history. We have left Him, so why are we surprised He’s leaving us? We have said, ‘We don’t need you anymore God, leave us alone.”

And so He has left us to our own devices.

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. ~ Galatians 6:6-8

Why Bad Things Happen to Good People

Governor Mike Huckabee said it best, “We don’t have a crime problem, or a gun problem or even a violence problem.  What we have is a sin problem and since we’ve ordered God out of our schools, our communities, the military and public conversations we really shouldn’t act so surprised when all Hell breaks loose.”

He also notes that no one wants to talk about the fact that we’ve lost more than 6,500 troops in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and not to mention the suicides afterward caused by Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and other factors.  That doesn’t seem to generate a great deal of headlines these days.  We have one million innocent and unborn babies die in their mother’s womb, sacrificed on the altar of convenience every year.  That’s 3,700 babies murdered/aborted every day in the U.S.

And yet we pay scant attention to that.

Our hypocrisy as a culture seems to know no bounds.

And we wonder why horrible things like the  Newtown, Connecticut  shooting happen.  The problem is the human heart and man’s fallen and rebellious nature against God.  People always ask, Why do bad things happen to good people?  The answer is because of sin.  Everyone suffers because of OUR SIN (yours and mine) yes, even innocent little children suffer because of the sins of the many.

For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; ~ Romans 3:23

We are all guilty of sin and our sin affects everyone around us.  This is why bad things happen to good people.  No amount of legislation or regulation can fix that.

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. ~ 2nd Chronicles 7:14

Without God the depravity of man’s soul knows no bounds.
